Become a Lab Assistant for your College Class
Before I even knew about the MLS program I was trying to gain experience while in college. I did this by working as a Lab Assistant for Chemistry, Biology, and Microbiology while working on my bachelor's degree.
Out of the three classes I worked to set up (Chemistry, Biology, and Microbiology) I would have to say Microbiology helped me the most during the MLS program later on. The concepts you learn in microbiology carry over to clinical microbiology. This is unlike Chemistry which uses beakers and graduated cylinders or Biology which deals more with nature or animals.
To become a lab assistant I didn’t have any experience except good grades in my college science classes. I always saw assistants skirt around the lab at the beginning or end of a period setting up supplies for each of the lab classes. It always looked fun so I looked into how to apply.
I built up the courage to talk to the laboratory manager to see what is required to become one. She had an opening and offered me the job. I said Yes!
